Maternity Services
All staff involved with maternity services must read paragraphs 2.84 to 2.87 of Working Together to Safeguard Children as revised in 2006.
Midwives are the primary health professionals likely to be working with women and their families around the time of delivery of a child. They may also work with support workers, health visitors and specialist key workers. The close relationship with the woman at the time of birth enables observation of family attitudes towards, and the potential to provide adequate care for, the infant. This may help to identify any potential problems arising in this respect.

The current estimate that ⅓ of cases involving domestic abuse arise or escalate around the time of pregnancy, requires special attention to be paid. This will require a supportive and enabling environment for all women and an openness to raise the subject with all women who use the service. Please refer to: National Service Framework and National Guidance on Responding to Domestic Abuse. See also "domestic abuse" in the "Particularly Vulnerable Children" section of the procedures.
