Roles and Responsibilities
NHS Telford and Wrekin
The responsibilities of NHS Telford & Wrekin are set out in paragraphs 2.44 to 2.51 of “Working Together to Safeguard Children” as revised in 2006.
The Chief Executive of NHS Telford and Wrekin has responsibility for ensuring that the health contribution to Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is implemented effectively across the whole local health economy through the NHS Telford and Wrekin’s commissioning arrangements. This includes not only specific clinical services, but also a public health responsibility across the whole local health economy.
NHS Telford and Wrekin must co-operate with the LA in the operation of the Safeguarding Children Board and provide advice and support in respect of specialist health issue. They will also co-ordinate the health component of Serious Case reviews.
NHS Telford and Wrekin must ensure that all health providers, including independent organisations with whom they commission services, have policies and procedures to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in line with, and informed by, Telford & Wrekin Safeguarding Children Board.
The Designated Doctor and Designated Nurse take a strategic and professional lead on all aspects of the health service contribution to Safeguarding Children across the NHS Telford and Wrekin health economy, which includes all service providers. Designated professionals are a vital source of professional advice on matters relating to safeguarding children for: other professionals; NHS Telford and Wrekin; the Safeguarding and Corporate Parenting services of the LA, and the Safeguarding Children Board. They review and evaluate the practices and learning from serious case reviews, from all involved health professionals and from providers who are involved with the NHS Telford and Wrekin.

Designated and Named professionals play an important role in promoting, influencing and developing relevant training, both single and inter-agency based, to ensure that the training needs of health staff are addressed. (See Training and Development section of these procedures)
All NHS Telford and Wrekin employees must undertake Child Protection Awareness training and are expected to undertake regular updates, at the appropriate level for their role, as explained in the NHS Telford and Wrekin’s Child Protection Training Strategy.
