Staff working in A & E, ambulatory care units, walk-in centres and minor injury units must be familiar with the procedure involved in making an enquiry as to whether or not a particular child is the subject of a child protection plan.
In addition, staff in A & E should be aware of children whose carers have asked for medical treatment from a number of sources, perhaps in order to conceal the repeated nature of injuries. Children from the same household who present repeatedly – even though the injuries are relatively minor – and for whom staff become concerned, should be referred to the Helpdesk (tel. 01952 385700) or the Emergency Duty Team (01952 676500) in accordance with these procedures. If possible the child and his or her family should be actively and appropriately involved in the referral process.
Notification to the child’s G.P. will be made when attendance is made at these centres. In cases where there is a clear risk of significant harm occurring, and consent is refused to notify other health professionals who are in contact with the child, this should be urgently discussed with the named professional, action taken in accordance with the decision made and a record made on the patient's note as to what has or has not been done. The child should be informed of the action taken if they are deemed to be competent. In other circumstances consent should be sought from any competent child for notification to be made to any other health professional who is in contact with them.
