Training Plan
All staff are referred to Working Together to Safeguard Children (2006), Chapter 4
Telford & Wrekin Safeguarding Children Board is committed to the development of inter-agency child protection training. The Board recognises that there is a distinction between individual agencies having the responsibility for staff development, and the need for staff from those agencies to train together in order to develop mutual understanding and so to be well placed to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. By offering training, the Board seeks to develop the concept of safeguarding within the context of providing a holistic, multi and inter-agency service for children whenever there are concerns for their welfare. This approach should prevail whenever a concern is expressed about a child and not necessarily wait until there is a risk of harm occurring.
The Training Sub Group, which comprises of representatives from a variety of statutory and voluntary agencies, emphasises three key strategic areas:
- the need to equip all staff with the basic knowledge to recognise a child at risk of significant harm; to consult; and, if appropriate, to make referrals
- the development of skills and confidence in dealing with safeguarding and protecting children, expanding the knowledge base of practitioners with specialist training events covering a variety of specific issues
- the formation of skills workshops that offer the opportunity to gain skills to work
with children, young people and families
The aims of the training programme are to increase joint understanding in child protection work by:
- Delivering high quality, Inter-agency child protection training which complements in-house single agency training
- Ensuring that training is consistent across Telford & Wrekin and is quality assured and evaluated on a regular basis
- Ensuring that the training reflects the latest research, legislation and other policy initiatives and addresses concerns arising from local or national sources
- Ensuring that training reflects the needs of practitioners and managers from all agencies by concentrating on those points of the child protection process in which practitioners work together, as well as amplifying knowledge and skills in specific areas of interest
- Incorporates issues of diversity into all training, reflecting a commitment to achieving joint understanding of the many contexts and communities within which children and their carers live
- Is accessible to all practitioners
The training identifies 3 levels of staff within an organisation,
- Those in regular contact with children and young people, and adults who are parents /carers.
- Those who work regularly with children, young people and adults who are parents/carers
- Those with particular responsibility for safeguarding children
