Race and Racism
Staff should read the section on page 202 of "Working Together to Safeguard Children". This passage points out that children from black or ethnic minority backgrounds are likely to have experienced harassment, racial discrimination and institutional racism. This experience is likely to affect the child's and the family's responses to assessment and enquiry processes. Failure to consider these effects will undermine efforts to protect the child from other forms of significant harm.
The effects of racism are different for different communities and for different individuals: they should not be thought of as uniform.
High quality, gender appropriate translation and interpretation services must be used in cases where the child's or the family's preferred language is not English.
Every child will be provided with services which will keep them safe, regardless of their legal status.
Staff should be aware of and promote the Safer Telford Hate Crime web site accessible from the Index page, useful web links.
