Training

The multi-agency training provided by Telford & Wrekin Safeguarding Children Board (TWSCB) offers a broad range of opportunities for practitioners to work together in a learning environment with a common aim of improving children’s safety and well-being. Research evidence and findings of Serious Case Reviews, undertaken when a child dies or suffers significant harm as a result of abuse or neglect, strongly support the importance and effectiveness of inter-agency training in developing safe and strong child protection practice.

This programme provides details of a wide variety of high quality inter-agency training which builds on the basic awareness delivered within your own agency. You will find the courses identified as Targeted and Specialist training, meeting the varied needs of our workforce.

The TWSCB runs a number of themed courses which focus on specific aspects of child protection: for example, considering the possible risks to children in particular circumstances.  These are often one off events or a short run of sessions which meet the learning needs identified locally and nationally. A key learning objective of all inter-agency training is that of networking, providing an opportunity for learners to learn from each other, understanding common areas of practice, boundaries and limitations which can impact on service delivery.  Inter-agency training is as much about what you bring and share, as the knowledge you take away.

Multi-agency training

TWSCB has a training pool of experienced safeguarding professionals/trainers, and is responsible for developing and delivering a wide range of safeguarding training on both a single and multi-agency basis to professionals and volunteers working within Telford and Wrekin.

The TWSCB training pool consists of professionals from many different agencies who work in Telford and Wrekin and who are knowledgeable about safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All training pool members have completed an TWSCB approved 'Train the Trainer' programme or professional equivalent. Trainers are expected to develop their skills and knowledge by undertaking further training, attending conferences and regular training meetings, as well as researching up-to-date information and material. Their training delivery is quality assured by the Training sub-group of the Telford & Wrekin Safeguarding Children Board.

Single agency training requirements

Telford & Wrekin Safeguarding Children Board (TWSCB) identifies that child protection training can be gained from a variety of sources. Each agency will have its own Single Agency Child Protection Training Strategy to equipped its workforce with sufficient knowledge and skills to fulfill its responsibility to safeguard and protect the children and young people in their care. This training will identify the organisations particular safeguarding requirements and systems staff members are required to follow to ensure safe practice.

Sometimes organisations are too small to provide in-house child protection training and may wish for advice and guidance about how to ensure their staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill their safeguarding duties. The TWSCB is able to offer this advice and guidance and, on occasions, training can be provided.

Please view our Charging and Cancellation Policy for further information. If you have any queries or questions, please email lscb@telford.gov.uk

It is the responsibility of an organisation to provide a basic introduction to Child Protection, as part of their induction training for new staff. TWSCB have agreed the expected learning outcomes for all agencies to include in their induction training. To support the sharing of information, a leaflet has been created which can be distributed as part of the learning.

There is an e-Learning programme for Schools and volunteers around safeguarding. If you or your school are interested or require some further information, please contact Karen Perry, Education Safeguarding Trainer on 01952 385488 or karen.perry@telford.gov.uk
